It has been brought to the attention of the students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community that our Florida Gulf Coast University mission statement was recently changed. The change that was made included removing the words “practice and promote sustainability” and replacing it with we only “promote sustainability.” Our university was founded on the concept of sustainability. The university has attracted thousands of students who are passionate about practicing environmental sustainability in order to cultivate a healthier future for generations to come. This has significantly affected current students, staffs, alumni, and the surrounding community. This petition is a request to change the mission statement to include that we “practice and promote sustainability.” This statement is more in line with the vision for FGCU and for the reason many students chose to attend this university.
