Ashby Boys Grammar School was given care of Lieutenant Colonel Philip Eric Bent's Victoria Cross for "Safe Keeping", "Safe Guarding" and "as a lasting stimulant to High Ideals" by his mother after he was awarded the Victoria Cross Posthumously for his actions during the Great War. The School has recently been in contact with Sotheby's Auction house to have the medal appraised with the intention of selling it at auction to raise funds for a new Sports Pavilion. This is against the wishes of Col Bent's family who wish the medal to remain where it is. Currently the medal is under the care of the Leicester Tigers Regimental Museum in Leicester and has had to be stored in a safe deposit box as it is not financially viable to display the original publicly due to inuance costs. A replica of the medal is on display in both the regimental museum and Ashby Museum. We ask the Board of Governors of Ashby School to reconsider this distasteful decision to sell Col Bent's Victoria Cross.
