Petition to Keep the Christopher Columbus Statue on the Bloomfield Town Green
The Issue
PETITION TO KEEP THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STATUTE ON THE BLOOMFIELD TOWN GREEN
WHEREAS, THE BLOOMFIELD CHAPTER OF UNICO NATIONAL (an Italian American Service Organization) in the 1970’s donated and erected a Christopher Columbus Statute on the historic Green. This was accomplished by the unanimous approval of the Mayor and Council.
WHEREAS, since that time, each year, Bloomfield Unico and the Knights of Columbus have celebrated the discovery of America and memory of the great navigator with ceremonies on the National Columbus Day holiday.
WHEREAS, also each year, Bloomfield Unico has celebrated the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and the proud Italian American Heritage of its members, both living and deceased, by sponsoring a Fourth Grade Essay Contest and Pancake Breakfast on the National Holiday for the students of Bloomfield. Happily, so, this has existed for 24 years with the tremendous support of the Administrators and teachers of the Bloomfield District. Annually the thirteen winners would receive recognition by Bloomfield Unico, the State Legislature, County and Local Government for their prized achievement.
BE IT MADE KNOWN, THAT WE THE UNDERSIGNED BY FORM OF THIS PETITION, ask the Mayor and Town Council of Bloomfield to preserve the Christopher Columbus statute in its present location. By doing so, the Mayor and Town Council, will continue to honor the memory of those departed members of Bloomfield Unico whose names appear on the statue, continue to honor the many contributions of the Italian American citizens of Bloomfield and its proud heritage throughout the years of existence and continue to honor the DISCOVERY OF AMERICA BY THE GREAT NAVIGATOR, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS.
