The Issue

Bloomfield High School begins at 7:45 a.m. - a start time that conflicts with well established adolescent sleep science and places students at daily risk of chronic sleep deprivation.

It is time for action.

Decades of research confirm that during puberty, adolescents experience a biologically driven delay in circadian rhythm. This makes it physiologically difficult for teenagers to fall asleep early enough to obtain enough sleep when school begins before 8:00 a.m.

Major medical organizations, including pediatric and sleep medicine authorities, have recommended that middle and high schools begin at 8:30 a.m. or later to support adolescent health and safety.

Research has linked early school start times to:

  • Reduced academic performance and impaired attention
  • Increased rates of depression, mood instability, and impulsivity
  • Greater risk of drowsy driving and motor vehicle accidents
  • Increased risk-taking behaviors
  • Impaired cognitive function and decision-making
  • Long-term physical health consequences

This is not speculation. It is evidence-based medicine.

Students in Bloomfield have gathered hundreds of survey responses reflecting widespread sleep deprivation, difficulty with morning alertness, and perceived impacts on learning and well-being, findings that mirror the scientific literature.

Meanwhile, most surrounding districts in Essex County already begin high school at 8:00 a.m. or later while maintaining comparable dismissal times.

Bloomfield students should not be placed at a disadvantage.

We call upon the Bloomfield Board of Education and district leadership to:

  1. Implement an 8:00 a.m. or later start time for Bloomfield High School beginning in the 2026–2027 school year; and
  2. Commit to a transition toward an 8:30 a.m. or later start time consistent with recommendations from major medical organizations.

This timeline allows for responsible planning while prioritizing student health, safety, and academic success.

This issue is not about convenience.

It is about protecting students from preventable harm and aligning school schedules with established science.

Every day that Bloomfield High School begins before 8:00 a.m., students are placed at a documented disadvantage.

We urge the district to act.

By signing this petition, you support an evidence-based change that prioritizes student health, safety, and learning.
