Every day, I witness heartbreaking videos on social media of tourists disturbing the precious sea lions in La Jolla, California. These majestic creatures, who have called this area their home for centuries, are repeatedly harassed for selfies and videos. It's painful to see their habitat invaded, their peace shattered, and their well-being compromised. This petition is my plea to protect these animals by limiting human access to their environment.

La Jolla's coast is a natural treasure, not just for its stunning views, but for its biodiversity, particularly the beloved California sea lions. Unfortunately, increased tourism has brought more than just economic benefits – it has led to a surge in disturbances that threaten the survival of these vulnerable animals. According to a study led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), human disturbances can lead to chronic stress in marine mammals. This stress impacts their ability to feed, reproduce, and thrive.

Despite the area's designation as a marine reserve, current measures are insufficient to prevent tourists from encroaching upon the sea lions' vital resting and breeding areas. Without stricter regulations or barriers to minimize human interaction, these animals continue to face the threat of abandonment of their pups, injury, and dwindling numbers.

We propose an immediate implementation of more robust crowd-control measures, such as designated viewing areas set at a safe distance, engaging local volunteers and rangers for monitoring, and educating the public about the importance of respecting wildlife. By restricting access to the most sensitive areas, we can ensure a harmonious coexistence where both humans and sea lions can enjoy the beauty of La Jolla without harm.
