Keep Jerry Safe at Home

Keep Jerry Safe at Home

The Issue

Several months ago a Blanchester Police Department midnight shift officer, Ptl. Kristen Jeffers, found a stray cat behind Putman Elementary School. On her off-duty time, Jeffers corralled the cat with the intention of taking him to a shelter.

According to BPD Chief Scott Reinbolt, Jeffers stopped at the police station on her way to the shelter, where the cat escaped from her clutches. She was unable to get him into her personal car to take him to the shelter. Jeffers hoped the cat would become more docile over the next few days and could then be transported.

As often happens, as the cat spent more time around the police station, all of the officers became attached to it. He was named “Jerry” and became “a sort-of unofficial mascot for the police department,” Reinbolt said.

On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the mayor received an anonymous written complaint about stray cats around city hall and on Wednesday he directed that “Jerry” be removed from the premises, Reinbolt said.

This petition is to let the Mayor John Carmen know Jerry is apart of this town, this police department, and Jerry gives comfort without expecting anything in return.  Jerry cost the village NOTHING, not one red cent of taxpayer money is spent on Jerry.

We understand funds are very tight in the police department and there are no extra luxuries for the officers. Jerry gives them that.

Studies have shown time and time again the calming effect pets have in stressful situations.  The veterans are offered PTSD dogs,  nursing homes welcome companion animals, Schools have dogs who help calm children, yet the Mayor is saying "Get rid of it".

Mayor John Carmen, we are petitioning you to change your mind and let Jerry live as he has been, in and around the police department.
