Make Black Rock Release Students from Rent

The Issue

We are currently living in a time of unprecedented circumstances due to COVID-19, and most students have moved out of their rooms at The Apollo Works Coventry to be with their family’s in this global pandemic. Students are vulnerable targets of private company’s who want to make a financial gain, especially in this particularly hard time. This has affected tenants of not only Apollo Works Coventry, but also Hope Street Apartments Liverpool, The Old Dairy Plymouth and Frobisher House Plymouth. All of which are under the same landlord BR Student Housing Unit Trust

Across the country, students are being allowed to cancel their tenancy agreements as it is the morally correct action to take, and it is unjust to charge students rent for accommodation they are not staying in. The company will gain a huge amount of profit from this pandemic as they will only have to pay a fraction of the normal utility bills and won’t be paying for maintenance.

Many students staying at Apollo Works and the other Black Rock owned properties and their families will be financially affected by COVID-19 and it is therefore ridiculous to be putting students under this pressure to pay for an unused service, when there are much more important things to be worrying about. Many students will have missed out on working due to the closing of all shops and restaurants etc, and parents themselves may be out of work and struggling due to the pandemic.

We are aware The Metal Works Birmingham- whose landlord is also Black Rock has been allowed out of their contracts and their rent has been waived so it is only just that everyone is given that equal right.
