#BLACKPANTS2024

The Issue

In the past week, the Wallington Public Schools administrators  have made a decision that will impact the lives of many students and their families. Children will now be prohibited from wearing black or navy pants to school and will only be allowed to wear khakis. Whoever created or decided on this policy has not thought of the problems that the parents of students and the students of Wallington will have to face. Young girls who struggle with inconsistent cycles and menstrual problems will have a disadvantage in school and be more prone to bullying when an accident occurs. As a girl myself, I know how it feels like to have to worry about things like this. This new dresscode policy will also make it a challenge for students to focus in school. We spend over 6 hours at school everyday and I believe that being comfortable would allow us to do so much more regarding education. Not only will this affect students in school but it will also affect their families. wallington is not a high income community and some families have issues making ends meet. This year, I bought over 6 pairs of black pants for school because they were allowed at the time. Each pair was over $40. I can’t imagine how hard it would be for families that have challenges making enough money for food to spend money on a whole new wardrobe that will probably be changed in the next year like it always is. There are many other issues this school has to deal with and focus on than making the already uncomfortable dresscode, more uncomfortable. There will be a WBOE meeting on July 15 and it would be a huge help to students and families to change the dresscode policy, so please attend if you are able to and voice your opinion!
