The Issue
My name is Zekaia Smith, and this is my son Maurice Brown jr. In March of 2018 I received a call that my son was arrested for 30+ plus counts of felony robbery. My son, who has never been in trouble with the law, is a US Army veteran and has a well document history of mental illness. Los Angles DA Jackie Lacey refuted the status of Maurice's mental health and increased his sentence from 20 to 96 years after Maurice refused a plea bargain and instead choose to go to trail and fight. This is equivalent to a murder charge. They want to take away his life. He is also facing fraudulent charges of additional, unsolved robberies - crimes he did not commit- and the DA used poor quality photos of black men (who are not Maurice) as their only evidence. We have been fighting this case for 2 year's now and my son has still not been sentenced. Every public defender dropped my son's case without reason. As his mother, I noticed that he wasn't fair legal representation he deserved, so I am reaching out to our communities for monetary support to help cover the cost of a private lawyer for my son. Maurice goes to trail on September 15th, his 29th birthday. If you have it in your hearts and wallets, We are asking for any help to get us to the $20,000 needed for this new lawyer.
