Bishop's Stortford Town Council have stopped carrying out maintenance in the Old Cemetery.
The Issue
As an armed forces veteran, I hold deep respect for those who have served before us and laid down their lives for our freedoms. As a member of the local Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, we annually honor these individuals by holding a solemn ceremony at Bishop's Stortford's Old Town Cemetery. After our gathering, we place crosses and poppies on more than 50 graves, paying tribute to our fellow servicemen and women. This tradition of remembrance deeply resonates with us and is a vital part of honoring the ultimate sacrifice that these heroes made.
However, Bishop's Stortford Town Council's recent decision threatens this deeply cherished tradition. The council has opted to transform the cemetery into a haven for wildlife and biodiversity, ceasing regular maintenance including grass cutting and vegetation clearance. While we appreciate the importance of conserving nature, it should not come at the cost of neglecting the dignity and memory of those who rest in the cemetery.
The cemetery is more than a potential wildlife sanctuary; it is hallowed ground that deserves care and reverence. By maintaining the cemetery grounds, we not only preserve the beauty of the site but also show respect to the deceased and provide a tranquil space for relatives, friends, and veterans to reflect and pay their respects.
The compromise is achievable. We propose a balanced approach that allows for both biodiversity and the respectful upkeep of the cemetery. This could include specific areas designated for wildlife, while ensuring that the graves are clear and accessible.
We call on the Bishop's Stortford Town Council to reverse their decision and reinstate the maintenance of the cemetery. It is crucial that we safeguard this sacred place for future generations who will continue to honor those who dedicated their lives to our nation.
