Students across the campuses of Birmingham City University have been set deadlines for various assignments by their department. However the majority of courses that are studied at Birmingham City University do not cover just one module/criteria, but several other modules thus resulting in more work due in the same time period. And that one of the factors as to why we must have an extended deadline for our assignments.

Throughout the semesters, face-to-face teaching was given in order to provide the student’s information and knowledge needed into completing their assignments. It also allowed students to approach lecturers and show them their draft/notes of what they understood and how it will be included in their assignment. By doing this, it allowed the student to have their own guide and a “starter” that would help whilst completing the work. Although support is being provided by the university via; email, Microsoft teams and Moodle, the material and understanding of topics are learnt more effectively in person. Some might say the teaching for some modules is finished but the lack of physical support can have a negative impact on students. Especially during this month as they usually dedicate this time period in helping students with their work in areas that the students are still feeling grey about.

This pandemic is creating a negative impact on students mental health as many students have come out and publicly declared that they are feeling stressed, depressed all due to the effect coronavirus has on the university work. Some have lost their jobs, others have to keep working as they are deemed as a key person not finding the right times to work on their assignments. Due to the virus, the university campuses were closed down in order to prevent any spreading of the virus thus resulting students to work at home. Many can not cope with working in the home environment due to their surroundings and would struggle to find a quiet area to work. We, students, do not ask for the cancellation of assignment, we ask for an extension for our deadlines.

The deadline(s) needs to be extended to support students as it will then give them time to cope and gain the motivation and concentration needed to complete these assignments.
