Billions Lost, Millions Suffer — Hold Corrupt Officials Accountable!

Billions Lost, Millions Suffer — Hold Corrupt Officials Accountable!
The Issue
Corruption has long been the invisible flood that drowns the Philippines. It is not just about the billions lost, but about the countless lives left in poverty, the communities left defenseless against disasters, and the dreams of ordinary Filipinos stolen before they even begin. While hardworking jeepney drivers, market vendors, and OFWs continue to pay their taxes, those in power treat the nation’s treasury like their personal bank account.
Just recently, the country witnessed yet another scandal. Over ₱545 billion was allocated for flood-control projects meant to protect Filipinos from the devastating impact of typhoons and heavy rains. But instead of hope, we uncovered ghost projects—bridges and dikes that never existed, substandard structures that collapsed before completion, and contractors that enriched themselves while families lost their homes to floodwaters.
According to reports, only 15 contractors cornered nearly 20% of the budget, while whistleblowers revealed that certain lawmakers and officials demanded 25–30% kickbacks from these contracts. These revelations eventually led to the resignation of the Department of Public Works Secretary, but resignation is not accountability.
This is not an isolated case. The Philippines has consistently ranked low in the Corruption Perceptions Index, scoring only 33/100 in 2024—placing us at 114th out of 180 countries, far below the Asia-Pacific average of 44. Our neighbors are moving forward, but we remain shackled by the same culture of graft.
Corruption is not just a political issue—it is a national emergency. Every peso stolen is a hospital left without medicine, a classroom without chairs, a road left broken, a family left submerged in floodwaters. Every signature on overpriced contracts is a betrayal of the public trust.
We refuse to accept a government that hides behind excuses while its people suffer. We refuse to live in a nation where leaders resign quietly but are never held accountable. And we refuse to let future generations inherit the same rotten system.
That is why we demand:
- An independent and transparent investigation into all flood-control and infrastructure projects.
- Public disclosure of budgets, contractors, and project status accessible to every Filipino.
- Whistleblower protection and digital tracking of funds, ensuring transparency at every level.
- Criminal and civil liability for those proven guilty of graft and corruption—regardless of position.
Corruption steals not just money—it steals lives, dignity, and trust. We deserve leaders who protect the people, not those who profit from our suffering.
Today, we call on every Filipino who believes in justice and accountability: Sign this petition. Raise your voice. Demand change.
Because the Philippines is not a ghost project. We are a nation of people, and we deserve better.
