Dear Save Pier 6, People for Green Space Foundation (PFGSF) supporters, and lovers of Brooklyn Bridge Park,
We write hopefully with the below news.
The scheduled court hearing on March 11 about the proposed plan to build at Pier 6, the southern Atlantic Ave. entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park, has been postponed for two months in order to discuss the “possibility of resolving the litigation.” [Link to court document below] The Park Corporation has asked for this long adjournment to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the future of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The PFGSF lawsuit, which grew out of the “Save Pier 6” grassroots movement (which started as a change.org petition), was initiated in the courts on July 18, 2014. The temporary restraining order granted last July on Pier 6 development will remain in place, and PFGSF remains fully confident in the position our legal team has proffered and the evidence supporting that position. We have received amicus briefs from a growing list of entities, including the Brooklyn Heights Association and our advocacy only gains momentum.
Many devoted members of our community have advocated for over 25 years to have a park along this world-class waterfront. These members of the community hold their concerns regarding the Park Corporation's lack of transparency, school overcrowding, traffic safety, and flood zones issues at Pier 6, and the challenges to placing luxury condos in a public park, to name a select few concerns, with considerable conviction, and a strong sense of moral purpose.
A long list of community groups have supported our advocacy and fact finding over these past few months; these organization include the PS 8 PTA, Brooklyn Heights Association, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund coalition and many, many others. Significantly, we are grateful for the strong support that we have received from our local elected officials, including State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez, Public Advocate Letitia James, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, Council Member Brad Lander and Council Member Stephen T. Levin. These are public leaders who love parks and who love Brooklyn and are focused on Brooklyn's future.
New York City has made a legendary investment in the development of this new park, and PFGSF recognizes the hard work and vision that has made this magical waterfront a reality (albeit only partially constructed today).
We are grateful that will live in a society where particularly spectacular destinations, like the Brooklyn waterfront, are set aside in perpetuity to be public and park spaces, for everyone to enjoy. Parks make cities places to live, work and play. It is the happiest outcome that Brooklyn Bridge Park’s 10 year-old plan has proven insufficiently ambitious.
We are grateful for everyone's support, and as always, inspired by our community. We look forward to continuing to update everyone as these discussions take place.
As always, we welcome all feedback. Please do not hesitate to write us at SavePier6@gmail.com, or on Facebook at Save Pier 6.
Much love on this first longer, and sunbeam filled, first Monday on Summer's clock.
xo,
Lori
