Thanks again for your support for the minimum safe passing legislation. We've done well to get the message to the Committee that BN's exemption is not OK. Now we need to keep the pressure on at the public hearings. If you're available, please come along to the public hearings to show your support for the safe passing legislation. The first of the hearings is scheduled for TOMORROW. Apologies for the late notice - this was just announced today. Further hearings will be announced on the Committee's website as they become available. (http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/eic/article/2945). Message from the Committee: Hearings begin on road rules for overtaking bicycles The parliamentary inquiry looking into minimum passing distances for overtaking bicycles will hold its first public hearing in Melbourne on Tuesday 3 May. The Victorian Parliament’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee will hear from Queensland’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety (via videoconference) and from the Amy Gillett Foundation. The public hearing will be held from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in Room G3 at 55 St Andrews Place, East Melbourne. The inquiry is examining the Road Safety Road Rules 2009 (Overtaking Bicycles) Bill 2015. The bill would require drivers to maintain a gap of between 1 metre and 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists. More than 150 submissions have been received. The hearing schedule, submissions and more details on the inquiry are available from the Committee’s website (http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/eic/article/2945). Issued: 2 May 2016
