Hi everyone, Thanks again for supporting the push to get Bicycle Network to change their weak position on the minimum safe passing distance in Victoria. CRITICAL NEXT STEP: Now we need to send the message to the Economy and Infrastructure Committee (responsible for the Parliamentary Inquiry) that Bicycle Network’s submission does not represent the views of its members. This is absolutely critical to ensure that the Committee does not simply accept Bicycle Network’s exemption clause, and does not think that the exemption is supported by Bicycle Network’s members, who were not consulted on this exemption clause. Can you please send one email to the Committee? Please send an email to LCLC@parliament.vic.gov.au, explaining very briefly and in your own words, that: 1) You are a Bicycle Network member, but Bicycle Network’s submission to the Inquiry does not represent your views 2) You disagree with the Bicycle Network submission’s exemption clause in section 5.3 3) 1-2 lines about why you disagree with the exemption clause. For example, you may wish to make points such as: a) Any modification of the national standard 1m/1.5m passing law will put Victorian riders at risk b) Riding in a painted bike lane does not provide a safety barrier c) School zones should not be exempted I’m working really hard in the background to make sure the Committee gets the message. This step from you will ensure that Bicycle Network members are heard loud and clear, and help counter their arguments, assuming they are called as witness to the Inquiry hearing (which is virtually a certainty). Please share this message with any other Bicycle Network members you know. The more who contact the Committee, the stronger our position will be. (Note that any submissions you make to the committee may become public record) Attendance at the Inquiry hearing In addition, we need people to physically attend the hearing. Dates have not yet been confirmed, but once they are I will let you know. The more members we have there in person to communicate our support for a full, uncompromised passing law, the better. Stay tuned for confirmation of dates. If you have any questions at all please message me via my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MelbourneCommuter/ Thank you for your support, let’s keep the pressure on!
