Dear Supporters,
I would like to share some great news about the waves of change in Nagaland. The Nagaland Two Wheeler Taxi Association (NTWTA) headquartered in Kohima on Tuesday inducted the first woman rider into the profession. There are two more women who are currently training under the NTWTA, will soon join the profession.
Ms. Liezietsu who is currently training under the association and wishes to join as a two-wheeler cabbie when she masters riding. She said: “I’m really excited. I don’t see many girls riding two wheelers or even cars... Societal stigma put us in the kitchen -- we belong there and we do well in that -- but I don’t think so... It’s really exciting to ride a two-wheeler.”
This is how one small initiative, which has started with the employment of just a single woman driver, will drive change. Hiring women is, without a doubt, going to have a snowball effect, because one empowered woman is bound to empower the women around her. The initiative by NTWTA sets an example for others on how change can start small but is very essential to start from somewhere. And hence I feel if a renowned company like Ola Cabs commits to my petition it is going to pave the path for many such initiatives across India, by pushing the other major players in the field to induct more women into their respective workforces and make the area of commercial driving more gender-friendly, equal, just and fair.
The petition is inching closer to the Women’s Day, 2020 and Ola Cabs hasn’t responded to the petition yet, but I am hopeful that they will.
