The Issue

Our world now is living in a high-technology era where every individual has free access to social media. From this scenario, communication and having strong connections has become faster or more convenient. However, it has also opened to various forms of bullying, both in person and online. Many students encounter harassment, discrimination, and harsh comments that have an unhealthy effect on their academic, mental, and emotional health.

Cyberbullying is the use of digital technologies such as social media, open forums, and messaging platforms to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. This bullying can occur anytime and has scope for a wider audience, making the impact long-lasting. Victims of cyberbullying often experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem and, in some cases, withdrawal from social activities and suicidal ideation.

In the Philippines, cyberbullying remains a significant issue, with nearly half of children aged 13-17 experiencing online violence [United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF, 2019)]. Moreover, a study among Filipino adolescents found that up to 80% of teenagers aged 13-16 reported experiencing cyberbullying, highlighting the high prevalence of cybervictimization in this age group (Del Rosario et al., 2021).

Furthermore, the increasing use of social media has made it easier for harmful behavior to spread quickly, often without the person being identified. Despite existing laws such as the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10627), many cases still go unreported due to fear, shame, or lack of awareness. This highlights the ineffectiveness of RA No. 10627 and the need for stronger implementation of policies and collaborative participation among schools, parents, and the community to ensure a safe environment for students.

We, the undersigned students, humbly request that our school's anti-bullying measures be strengthened in light of this concern. Every student should have access to a respected, safe, and learning environment where they may express themselves without worrying about criticism or injury.

We humbly request the following actions:

 1. Campaigning about anti-bullying, indicating the meaning, causes, and effects

2. Enhancement of policies, regulations, and consequences for bullying behavior.

3. Provide better support and counseling for the victims of bullying.

Through this petition, we promote a violence-free environment, kindness, and respect for students. We hope this can serve as a voice for the victims of the cyberbullying. The advancement of technology has made our lives easier and helped us feel more connected. However, the misuse of technology can take away the hope of future generations.
