Better Support for Young Athletes in the UK

Better Support for Young Athletes in the UK

The Issue

My name is Matthew Briggs, and I played my first Premier League match for Fulham FC before I had even sat my GCSE's. At the tender age of 16, my education was sidelined as I was thrust into the spotlight, playing alongside players twice my age. The support system was lacking and left me to navigate this new world on my own. This experience didn't fare well for me, and through this petition, I aim to change the lives of others in similar situations.

Young athletes often face a daunting transition as they move up into more senior levels while still being at a young age themselves. They are suddenly exposed to public scrutiny and financial responsibilities that they may not be equipped to handle. Moreover, their mental health can suffer due to these pressures.

Young athletes are at risk of experiencing significant stress from balancing their sport commitments with academic demands and social activities. Furthermore, sudden fame can lead them towards poor financial decisions without proper guidance.

It's time we ensure that our young athletes get the support they need during this critical phase in their career - from mental health assistance to dealing with public interest and wise investment advice. They should not be forgotten or treated as adults without having adequate education or support.

By signing this petition, you're advocating for better resources and systems in place within sports organisation's across all levels - ensuring our young talents are nurtured responsibly rather than being left alone in an adult world too soon.

I am now working as a player care mentor at Fulham FC where I have joined a terrific team offering player care and pastoral support. We look after the players wellbeing and psychological welfare.  I am so happy and thankful to be able to make a difference to young people and be apart of something I wish I had had as a youngster.  Now we need to make sure every young athlete gets this level of support.
