Better Menopause Treatment and Support for Women After Breast Cancer

We call on the UK Government and NHS to ensure that every woman who experiences menopause as a result of breast cancer or its treatment has access to specialist, timely and appropriate menopause care.

Breast cancer treatment can cause early or sudden menopause and severe symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, anxiety, joint pain, vaginal and urinary problems, fatigue, memory difficulties and changes to emotional wellbeing.

For many women, these symptoms can continue for years after their cancer treatment and can have a profound effect on their quality of life.

We believe women who have been through breast cancer deserve more than simply being told to “put up with” their symptoms.

We are calling for:

• Better access to specialist menopause clinics for women after breast cancer.

• Clear NHS guidance on safe and effective treatment options for women who cannot or should not take HRT.

• Greater awareness among GPs, breast care teams and other healthcare professionals about menopause following breast cancer.

• Improved access to non-hormonal treatments and other appropriate therapies for menopausal symptoms.

• Better support for sexual health, vaginal and urinary symptoms, sleep, mental wellbeing, bone health and overall quality of life.

• A clear pathway between breast cancer services, GPs and specialist menopause services.

• Every woman to receive information about menopause and the possible effects of her breast cancer treatment, with appropriate support offered throughout and after treatment.

Women who have survived breast cancer should not have to suffer in silence.

We survived breast cancer. We deserve support for what comes afterwards.
