Ask City of Greater Bendigo to rethink their Organic Waste options!

The issue

The City of Greater Bendigo is about to embark on a program to provide a total organic waste collection service. All ratepayers will pay for this service and it will probably be compulsory.

Currently, a small local business, Greenaway Bins provides this much needed, environmentally friendly, cost-saving, green waste service for the region. However, as Greenaway has not been invited to tender for the City of Greater Bendigo’s new organic waste service, its future is now uncertain.

This uncertainty brought about by a Council who on May 27th this year endorsed the CEO’s proposal for its refreshed City Futures Directorate to provide

“A significantly elevated commitment to small business support, facilitation and development.”

From the Greenaway facebook page:

“As the city's first and only green waste collection provider, we had hoped and would have welcomed an approach by the Council to play a part of any future developments in this area. Unfortunately this has not been the case.”

In building up their business over the past seven years, Greenaway Bins has

  • Diverted 15-25 tonnes of green waste away from landfill each week
  • Contributed to the positive trend of the amount of green waste in Bendigo rubbish bins reducing.
  • Ensured huge savings for the Council, due to the amount of green waste that has been diverted from landfill.
  • Employed local people.

If you would like to show your support for:

  1. Greenaway Bins and would like to endorse their service; or
  2. think that the Council should give small businesses a ‘fair go’; or
  3. want to be able to choose how you manage your organic waste, e.g. use  green waste, worm farms, compost bins;
