RV and automobile sheltering is on the rise along the Pacific coastline in California, Oregon, and Washington state. Mobile homestead status can occur when people are displaced from their home and resort to using their car or recreational vehicle for shelter. Parking fines and towing fees for code infractions cause more harm than good for people with financial difficulty living in their cars. Heating and air conditioning cost and maintenance cost for car upkeep make mobile sheltering unstable. Poor weather conditions exacerbate an already difficult situation.
Parking safely can be a community challenge when attention to the vulnerable conditions of unhoused mobile Homesteads is ignored or handled poorly.
