Dear President Lukashenka!

From 9th till 25th May 2014 the Ice Hockey World Championship will take place in Belarus. The 9th of May, the opening day of the championship, will also mark the 69th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Day of Victory.

On the occasion of this unique day, we respectfully ask you to decree a special amnesty under which Ihar Alienevich, Ales Bialiatski, Mikalai Dziadok, Andrei Haidukou, Eduard Lobau, Vasil Parfiankou, Artsiom Prakapenka, Mikalai Statkevich and Yauhen Vaskovich will be released.

According to information from Belarusian and international human rights organisations, the above-mentioned people are all political prisoners, whose imprisonment is a serious violation of human rights. According to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Belarus is obligated to guarantee these rights, having already signed up to the covenant.

We appeal to you to allow the release of all political prisoners in Belarus under a special amnesty, to enable an unblemished Ice Hockey World Championship to go ahead.

We, the German-Swiss NGO Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights, have been working on issues related to human and civil rights in Belarus since 2009. We refer to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 1948 and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights from 1966 in stating that the Lukashenka-regime doest not provide basic rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press or freedom of religion for its citizens.

In the course of the current campaign we are collecting signatures for the release of political prisoners in Belarus. The list will be handed over to the presidential administration.
