Beechworth Historic Carriages Relocated to Railway Goods Shed so they Stay in Beechworth

The issue

Beechworth is the home of a collection of historic carriages owned by the National Trust.

These carriages have been housed and displayed at a local brewery for many years. The brewery is expanding and now needs to utilise the space where the carriages are located. The carriages will soon loose their home.

The Beechworth History & Heritage Society along with the Beechworth Old Cranks Motor Club (96 members) have identified the vacant Railways Goods Shed in the town Historic Precinct as the preferred currently available location for the retention of the carriage collection in Beechworth.

The Indigo Shire who own and manage the Goods Shed have been unsuccessful in seeking a commercial tennant for the goods shed since it was renovated in 2020. To date the Shire has been unwilling to offer the Goods Shed to house the carriage collection and as a result there is a real risk that the National Trust will remove the collection from Beechworth.

The removal of the Carriages from Beechworth would we believe impact on the towns historic and tourism potential.

This petition will be presented to the Indigo Shire in support of the request to reconsider and offer the Goods Shed, at least on a short term basis, so that the carriage collection is not lost to the town.
