Becoming a Friend of the River Medway

The Issue

BECOMING A FRIEND OF THE RIVER MEDWAY

💧WHY THE RIVER NEEDS FRIENDS💧

For centuries, rivers have been treated as resources to extract from or problems to manage. They’ve become background noise to human activity – no longer seen as the living systems that sustain life.

The results are clear: the River Medway, like many rivers across the UK, is suffering.

Pollution, sewage overflows, chemical runoff, litter, and over-extraction aren’t isolated incidents. They’re signs of a deeper cultural disconnect – a mindset that treats rivers as waste channels and water as limitless. The once-clear waters of the Medway now carry the burden of that disconnection.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Burial sites and folklore tell us that the River Medway was once revered – a place of offerings, mystery, and respect. Rivers were seen as sacred and alive. In many cultures, they still are. Water is used sparingly, treated with deep care, and spoken of as kin.

Here in the UK, we use over 140 litres of water a day – often without thinking. A third of that goes to flushing clean, drinkable water down toilets, into ageing systems that too often send pollution right back into the river.

So we must ask: What changed? And more urgently: What can we do now?

🤗WHAT IS A 'FRIEND' OF THE RIVER? 🤗

To be a friend means more than caring – it means showing up, listening, and giving back.

Becoming a Friend of the River Medway is about honouring the River as a living being, not a backdrop. It’s about slowing down, paying attention, and rebuilding a relationship of respect, reciprocity, and care. It’s not just about protection – it’s about companionship.

This is a return to relationship – a remembering of something ancient and true: that rivers are to be honoured, not harmed.
