Because Parenting Is Not Gendered

Because Parenting Is Not Gendered
The Issue
As a parent in Winnipeg, I’ve encountered numerous occasions where public places don’t have diaper changing stations available in men’s washrooms. Fathers, single dads, grandfathers, and other caregivers who look after children regularly face the challenge of not having a safe or clean place to change a baby. It's a situation that needs a societal shift to embrace modern parenting roles.
In today’s world, shared parenting responsibilities have become more common and emphasized, reflecting an evolving understanding of family dynamics. Yet, the facilities we rely on when outside the home have not kept pace with these changes. Public spaces in Winnipeg should accommodate all caregivers equally, ensuring they have access to essential facilities like diaper changing stations, regardless of gender.
The absence of these facilities in men's restrooms is not merely an inconvenience; it's indicative of an outdated perception of parental roles. Statistics show that an increasing number of fathers are actively participating in the upbringing of their children, making it imperative that our public infrastructure evolves. According to Statistics Canada, nearly half of Canadian fathers are now staying home as primary or equal caregivers whenever possible. This rising trend highlights the urgent need for facilities that cater to all.
Improper or unhygienic diaper changing can lead to discomfort, infections, and more serious health issues for infants. Without adequate facilities, caregivers are pressured to resort to inappropriate or unsanitary locations for changing. This should not be the norm in a city that prides itself on diversity and equality.
Therefore, this petition is calling on the city planners, policymakers, and business owners in Winnipeg to ensure diaper changing stations are installed in all men’s public washrooms. By doing so, we would not only be committing to gender equality in caregiving roles but also supporting the health and well-being of our children.
Join us in urging a needed change to improve the parenting experience for everyone in Winnipeg by signing this petition.
