The Issue

Imagine living in a place where expressing your thoughts could lead to severe punishment or where fleeing from danger results in detention rather than safety. This is the harsh reality faced by many Eritreans today. The Eritrean government has continually overlooked human rights violations, including degrading treatment, rape, and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

One of the notorious spots for such abuses is the Sawa military training camp. Girl recruits face grave risks of sexual abuse and harassment, overshadowing their mandatory service. The scarcity of educational resources denies them the potential for a better future. This crisis extends beyond the borders; hundreds of Eritreans who have sought safety abroad and were forcibly returned have encountered arbitrary detainment upon returning. Their aspirations for freedom and dignity are met with chains and cells.

Our voices must resonate louder than the silent cries of families torn apart. The right to freely express oneself is suffocated in Eritrea. The dark mystery surrounding the fate of 27 individuals who disappeared in 2001 serves as a grim reminder of the perils of voicing dissent.

The international community cannot remain a mute witness as these injustices persist. We demand that Eritrea uphold basic human rights standards, implement policies that protect citizens, especially women and young girls, from sexual and gender-based violence, and reevaluate the educational and military conditions at Sawa.

We urge global leaders and human rights organizations to place pressure on Eritrea to release detainees who have been unjustly imprisoned. A commitment to transparency and dialogue can start to turn the tide for the Eritrean people.

It’s time to amplify the voices of Eritreans suffering under oppressive conditions and to call for a transformation that respects human dignity and freedom.

Join us in being the voice for the voiceless. Sign this petition and stand in solidarity with the Eritrean people, demanding justice and fundamental human rights for those who have been silenced for too long.
