Be Conscious, Curate, Choose, Conserve, Cut, Convert and Own the Earth!
The Issue
The world needs sustainable clothing, today! The future of our planet is at stake if we do not make a conscious effort to switch to sustainable clothing globally.
- The world statistics from the fabric industry should be a wake up call for all humanity. Clothing manufacturers and retailers overproduce up to 30% of clothes annually, generating 13 million tons of waste . Unsold clothes are burnt, polluting the environment in a massive way. 16% of the world's pesticide use and 10% of world carbon emissions come from the non-sustainable fashion industry. Globally, 85% of the textiles are dumped into landfills. Plastic waste from non-sustainable clothing exponentially increases the proliferation of immensely dangerous micro-plastics .
- The Benefits of sustainable clothing outweigh the cons. Sustainable brands use natural or recycled, biodegradable materials that eliminate dyes, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides and reduce water and energy usage. Sustainable clothes conserve animal lives, help industry workers; they are of a very high quality, helping you to buy less; they protect your health and make the planet a better place to live in. The positive trend set by major fashion brands like Stella McCartney, Mara Hoffman, Patagonia, Iris Van Herpen, Everlane, Cotopaxi, Eileen Fisher, with their choice to use 3D Printing, recycled plastic for swimwear, make bioplastic from potato waste, make leather from Apples, mangoes, bananas, use algae for dyes, make rayon from eucalyptus, are just a few examples that should inspire all of us to switch to sustainable clothing today.
- The horrific impact on humanity, natural resources and health is reason enough to make the switch to sustainable clothing right now. According to a Columbia University Article by Renee Cho , the non-sustainable fashion industry consumes 93 billion metric tons of clean water each year, 8,000 tons of chemical used in the dyeing process, which causes 20 % of global industrial water pollution and severe health issues. Over 170 million children are forced into labor. 5,000 gallons of water is used to make one Jean and one T-Shirt, whereas organic, sustainable cotton reduces water consumption by 91% .
I conclude with a plea to the world : Join me and please sign this petition that will help save our planet, human and animal lives and serve to curb the impact of climate change effectively.
Thank you,
Rhea
