BCHS Dress Code Petition
The Issue
We are proud to be part of a Christian school community that values respect, integrity, compassion, and the dignity of every student. We believe our dress code should reflect these values by treating all students fairly while maintaining appropriate standards of modesty.
Currently, the dress code places stricter limitations on female students than male students, prohibiting items such as leggings, tank tops, and sweatpants while requiring girls' shorts to have a minimum 5-inch inseam. These policies can make female students feel unfairly targeted and reinforce the idea that girls are responsible for preventing distractions rather than encouraging personal responsibility from all students.
We respectfully ask the administration to update the dress code by allowing leggings, modest tank tops, and clean sweatpants or athletic pants free of inappropriate graphics or language. We also ask that the 5-inch inseam requirement be replaced with a general expectation that shorts are modest and appropriate for school, recognizing that students have different body types and clothing fits.
These clothing items are comfortable, practical, affordable, and commonly worn in many schools. A student's clothing does not determine their character, work ethic, or ability to learn. We believe our school can uphold Christian values of modesty while adopting a dress code that is fair, respectful, and gender-neutral.
Our goal is not to eliminate dress standards but to modernize them in a way that reflects both the needs of today's students and the values our school teaches. By creating a dress code based on modesty, respect, and personal responsibility rather than unequal restrictions, our school can foster a more welcoming and supportive learning environment for everyone.
We respectfully ask the administration to consider these changes and work with students to create a dress code that reflects fairness, dignity, and Christian compassion. Thank you for your consideration and support.
