Mise à jour sur la pétitionBCTF: retract your insulting "social justice" publicationAnother "social justice" poster

Clearly there have been some poor decisions made regarding language and describing the military. Another document has been brought to attention - "Reject Violence." http://bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/SocialJustice/Programs/GlobalEd/2015%20PAGE%20Poster-REJECT.pdf
This is the relevant excerpt containing objectionable language: "Children are not told about these significant facts: they may be exposed to depleted uranium in Afghanistan, they may find themselves complicit in war crimes, and that the annual number of soldiers going AWOL in Canada has increased over 100% in the last five years. Recruiters are taught to exploit children’s need for belonging, self-esteem, respect, and the promise of a future. Also, many of our students belong to the Army Cadets, which is funded by Canadian National Defence. We need to be aware of the information that these students may be receiving. "
That joining the forces means you may be complicit in war crimes is an astonishing accusation. If the authors of this piece or the BCTF know of any war crimes being committed then I hope they would report them. The AWOL rate does not have a footnote or reference so may be an outdated number from immediately after Canada became involved in Afghanistan. The language to describe recruiters' training I can leave to actual recruiters to explain but knowing many, many military people I could not think of one who believes they were tricked into the forces. Children will get information from many sources and our job as teachers is to try and help them make sense of things by providing a space for their questions and helping them find their own way to greater understanding.
These posters do not reflect the culture of the CAF and as has been so eloquently pointed out during discussions around this petition - and which I will badly paraphrase here - we need and want thinking soldiers and people who want to serve. That is the culture that we should be preserving in the military. These kinds of publications do not support that.
I am heartened to see many teachers speaking out about these posters and to see people discussing the issues. As a teacher I hope that discussion continues and I hope that people will see that this is not a majority position. Myself and other teachers are trying to hold the union to account as the voice of teachers in this province. It is a role we all have to take in various ways - in politics, in our places of worship, in our communities and sometimes even in defence of the educators who wish to address all sides rather than demonise one.
Thank you for adding your voice to this petition and if you didn't then thank you for taking the time to think about it. Truly.
