Stop BC Ferries and our 3 Local Governments from running roughshod over local residents.

The Issue

You have decided to implement changes to the BC Ferries system which will cause unnecessary stress, undue hardship and negatively affect thousands of Sunshine Coast residents quality of life, without "Community" engagement.  By forcing residents to make Reservations both ways and  implementing a toll booth on the Langdale side, traffic will back up the Bypass and into Gibsons.  Thereby blocking our access roadways to Langdale and Port Mellon where residents live, where there is an Elementary school, and where there is one of our largest employers on the Sunshine Coast.

Commuters to and from Vancouver often do not know exactly when they will be leaving the office due to work demands.  These rules of having to have Reservations means that many residents of the Sunshine Coast will not be able to make it home to their families on the Sunshine Coast.  And how will this work for Commercial vehicles?

And only 5% Availability for medical appointments and last minute arrivals? How will this work for family emergencies and last minute medical appointments?

And what if we go to Costco, Walmart or Christmas shopping and get stuck in a checkout line?  Are we supposed to drop everything to race to make our Reservation?  We are a small community that does everything to support local businesses, but sometimes we have to shop off Coast.

And how will this work for local Sports team.  What if they are playing a team in the City and their game goes into overtime?  Are they supposed to give up the game to race to make that Ferry reservation?

What if our Specialist/Dr/Surgeon in the City is running behind that day?  Are we supposed to leave the appointment/surgery early (which has been made month's in advance) to try to make that Reservation.  It's a little hard to know how long these appointments/surgeries will go.

And you say this is a "trial", but BC Ferries will be spending money building this infastructure (putting in extra booths, debit systems, hiring and training of staff, etc).  There is no way this plan is just on a "trial" basis.  The money for this crazy project should be put instead towards an aging fleet of ships which are breaking down.

This new plan by BC Ferries, the SCRD,  Town of Gibsons and the District of Sechelt (made behind closed doors) has not been properly thought through and has not taken into consideration any of the needs of our community (which is over 30,000).  The 3 Local Governments had no right to make this monumental of a decision on behalf of Sunshine Coast residents (which will negatively affect thousands) without "Community" engagement or consultation.  We do not live in a country that is ruled by a dictatorship, however your decision to do this without due diligence and "Community" engagement or consultation has very strong characteristics of a dictatorship. This plan will cause Sunshine Coast residents unnecessary stress, undue hardship & will negatively affect thousands of Sunshine Coast residents' lives.  This is our home and our highway and our input and needs have to be considered.  Your decision to do this during a Pandemic when there is no opportunity for public consultation, is very disturbing.  We the people of the Sunshine Coast are demanding that this plan be stopped immediately until proper "Community" engagement/consultation takes place with the residents of the Sunshine Coast.
