Remove plastic toys from CBBC magazines

Remove plastic toys from CBBC magazines
The Issue
My daughter is at an age where she loves a good magazine & as most now support EYFS curriculum I think they’re a fun way to encourage learning. BUT....
I am having to say no to them & gently steer her away from the news stand.
Why?
PLASTIC!!
I realise this makes me a totally unfun mum & a bit of a hypocrite given I am a child of the cereal box gift generation, but knowing what we know now about the impact disposable plastic is having on our environment, I think it’s time for change.
Let’s look at a few numbers...
Immediate Media Co are the UK’s #1 publisher of children’s titles & hold the licences for all the CBBC magazines.
The 8 CBBC titles have a combined circulation of 355,025.
They publish a total of 110 issues of these titles over a year.
If each magazine came with just 1 plastic toy that’s 39.1m items a year.
But they don’t come with just 1, some were in excess of 7 items! So let’s be generous & take an average of 3 items per issue.
That’s almost 120m bits of plastic that end up who knows where!
I’ll just let that sink in for a moment...
Our children will have to deal with the environmental fall out of our past choices, but surely we need to be setting them on the right path for the future.
Come on BBC & CBeebies, it’s time to step up & drive a change! I ask you to stop all free plastic gifts with your magazine titles.
To other parents out there, I ask for your support, let’s do this!
