Allow Titty agency in rejecting sexism from the BBC

The Issue

The BBC should not be allowed to alter classic books to patronise us. If you are a fan of Arthur Ransome's 'Swallow & Amazons' or not they shouldn't change writers work in this, to my mind sexist, way. They have  decided that the name 'Titty' is not an appropriate name in the modern world for a young girl to have. And why not - because they feel it has a sexualised content that will cause those of such predisposition to snigger. Roger is perfectly ok, Dick is perfectly ok - so it is alright for the boys - but modesty commands that with female characters the name 'Titty' is a step too far. How dare they legitimise schoolboy prurience of this nature on our behalf. You do not change a name because Sexism tries to appropriate it, you stop the sexism - you don't bow to it, you don't give it agency by changing Titty to Tatty. What does this say about our world or what the BBC thinks about themselves that they think they can just do this? It is no better than putting a voluminous dressing gown around the Venus de Milo - and quite simply they have no right or mandate to do it. Swallows and Amazons and good sense for ever!   Say no to 'Aunty' knows best!  Join in with the conversation on twitter @  #reclaimthename
