Help Bassett HS get a traditional graduation ceremony

The Issue

After 4 years of high school, the class of 2020 will drive their cars and be handed their diplomas. After years of blood, sweat, and tears this is how Bassett High School thinks we should receive our diplomas. This is not what we deserve. We didn’t give our all in exchange for a drive-by ceremony. We exhausted ourselves every day and every night during high school, put in extra hours, and gave our all to our classes to be able to walk across the stage one day, in front of our friends and family, and shout WE DID IT!

The feeling won’t be the same. Driving up in our cars for a “drive-thru” graduation will fall terribly short of what we deserve. Not only will the class of 2020 not get a traditional graduation ceremony, but our activities have been canceled as well. Throughout the duration of our 4 years of high school, we have been looking forward to our senior activities; prom, senior picnic, grad night, and most of all our graduation. But COVID-19 happened and placed us all in quarantine. Many other districts reacted to COVID 19 by rescheduling and postponing the graduation ceremonies for their students- and rightfully so. Our district, however, decided to completely cancel all of our events, including our graduation ceremony. Our district could have followed the lead of the West Covina District and rescheduled our ceremony- but they didn’t. Now we will drive up in our cars and simply pick up our diplomas, losing that once in a lifetime feeling others get to have. Covid-19 has already taken so much from us. Are we not deserving of a celebration?

We deserve to be celebrated. Even if it’s not at the date it should have been, we still deserve to have a graduation ceremony. So many memories have been robbed from us already- all we ask for is to at least have our activities postponed to a safer date. These are once in a lifetime memories that we can never get back.

We are deeply saddened and heartbroken that we did not get to finish the school year like we thought we would. We appreciate the hard work our school has put into giving us a version of graduation for us. We know this must have been a tough decision given the social distancing guidelines we have in place, but a drive-thru graduation does not sit right with us.

The 2020 class simply requests that these lifelong awaited events be rescheduled rather than canceled. We wish for Bassett High School to realize that we deserve more than a drive-through diploma pick up. We deserve to have fun and be celebrated for our hard work with our friends. We deserve our events to be postponed-not canceled.
