Dear Friends and Supporters,
Long time without an update but that does not mean we have not been working on the waste issue that affects us All.
Starting with our event we are organizing on Saturday 13th June from 2.30pm-4.00pm, Osidge Lane Library.
The aim is to picket Cllr Lisa Rutter’s surgery calling for her recall as councilor. Lisa Rutter voted for the cuts to Barnet Library Service and abstained on the vote for the waste depot. That resulted to the waste depot proposal going through with the Mayor’s casting vote. As we were told during her surgery on 7th March 2015, her actions were dictated by the party ‘whip’ and not her resident’s and voter’s wishes for a descent life. She also added that she would not live near the waste herself.
Your participation is important if we are to pressurize Barnet Council so looking forward to seeing you all there.
We have also started a petition for Cllr Rutter to resign that you can find on: https://www.change.org/p/immediate-resignation-of-cllr-lisa-rutter-for-voting-yes-towards-the-abbots-depot-we-the-undersigned-declare-ourselves-to-have-no-confidence-in-cllr-lisa-rutter-in-saying-no-to-the-abbots-waste-depot
Our letter sent to the Evening Standard by Rita and Traudl, two of the RAAD members has been published: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/londons-toxic-air-has-already-caused-1300-premature-deaths-this-year-10296515.html
It concentrates on the added diesel fumes that are coming to our area along with the waste and are lethal for our community and our children that live and go to schools nearby and play in the New Southgate Recreation Park opposite the proposed waste depot.
RAAD also, assisted in exposing the true reason that Barnet Council wants to relocate the waste and who will really benefit from the relocation and our tax money: and it is not us residents : http://betterbarnet.nationbuilder.com/labour_makes_official_complaint_over_inaccurate_depot_information?recruiter_id=3757
An interesting article that further exposes Barnet Council and is a glimpse of what further traffic chaos is awaiting us was published by local blogger on 9th of June and can be found: http://reasonablenewbarnet.blogspot.co.uk/
On April 16th, members of the RAAD committee along with our local ward Cllr Kathy Levine, visited the Mill Hill Waste Depot in order to see, hear and smell the operations first hand.
In short, the 23-ton waste lorry empties the food waste in two big food containers that are open on the top. When full, they are taken away by 40-ton lorries to be further processed.
The rest of the recyclable waste is emptied on the floor (!) where another vehicle scoops it up and empties in the 40-ton lorries to be taken away for further processing. According to the Mill Hill waste depot officers, the area is swept with a broom (!) daily while the waste trucks are washed twice a month. The vehicle beeps for as long as it is moving- which is pretty much all day from 9.30am onwards, when the waste trucks start returning to the waste depot full of waste.
During our visit the stench was unbearable and it was not summer yet. The noise of the trucks driving in and out along with the beeping noise of the vehicle was really loud.
We have pics that we cannot attach here and do not describe the stench but I would gladly forward to anyone requesting them via our barnetraad@gmail.com email. We have also posted a few on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1409433536029416/
We also feel the need to thank the staff in the Mill Hill waste depot for their services to the community and their handling of our waste.
RAAD has also received after 5 Freedom Of Information requests to the council, the vehicle survey from Barnet Council and surprise, surprise: the numbers do not add up but the relocation of the Mill Hill waste depot is actually guaranteeing an increase NOT ONLY in the traffic in our area but also in the diesel fumes as all the council vehicles operate on diesel fuel.
We cannot attach a jpg here but we have posted it on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1409433536029416/ . I would gladly forward the PDF to anyone requesting them via our barnetraad@gmail.com email.
There is no social impact survey of the consequences of bringing the waste in our vicinity will have on the residents and no plan from Barnet Council to do so.
We are fighting to have a bat survey within the proposed depot as precious bats have been seen in the area during the hot summer nights but Barnet Council is refusing to do so at the moment- which is illegal of course.
We are currently waiting for the Council to submit the planning application. We were told it will be submitted sometime in June and we will have a consultation period to object on the planning. You can be checking along with us daily on: https://www.barnet.gov.uk/citizen-home/planning-conservation-and-building-control/submit-a-planning-application/view-or-comment-on-a-planning-application.html
With the planning application it is a matter of the council approving the council so we need to fight it with our comments and pressurize the local government as much as possible.,
We need your support for the good of our community and the better future for our children so looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday.
