AUDLEY HOUSE HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR DEMOLITION
WE NEED EVERYONE TO LEND A HAND TO TRY TO OPPOSE IT (skip to the end for email addresses)
96 Audley Road (known locally as Audley House) has been approved for demolition by local committee this week, largely ignoring our many points of opposition.
Over 170 residents, and 200+ petitioners objected to this proposal, which threatens our way of life to an absurd degree, as well as demolishing a building of local character and renown. Residents are extremely angry about this concession to developers, and want this approval to be reversed.
Audley House has a rare and unusual period 5 sided two-storey bay window. It may be the only example left in the area. Heritage England has been notified of this, and we would very much like there to be enough time for them to consider the merit of this feature and the house’s overall significance.
When this house is gone, the character of the Neeld estate will die with it.
Claire Farrier, the committee's meeting chair, agreed with the opposition view that the disproportionate scale of this development raised serious concerns, and our West Hendon councillors submitted an objection, that this was a house of significance to the area, and that it should not be demolished. Nevertheless, Hendon Councillor Josh Conway and others voted to demolish this building, in a 2:3 vote.
Write to everyone on this list if you can!
- tell them we have serious concerns about the impact of the now-greenlit development - most notably on the water pressure and strain on sewage facilities (this area is a notoriously low-pressure spot). Concerns that were mentioned at hearing and not addressed. We feel - and we have seen at other similar developments such as 1 Graham Rd - that this type of development puts huge strain on the community’s ability to remain clean and sanitary, and even the concession of larger-scale waste management facility only points to the fact that the building is generating much more unsanitary waste.
Likewise, the proposal to limit parking permit availability in order to try to combat over-parking suggests that the developers know the outsized impact of their ambitions. This development could put 20 or more cars on surrounding streets, permits or no permits. It is absurd.
Tell these representatives to give us time for Heritage England to assess the property's heritage value!
Tell them this decision is tremendously unpopular and a betrayal of the community!
Tell them this is massive overreach, which Claire Farrier (committee chair) herself voted against, citing concerns of overdevelopment.
WE HAVE TO TRY AND STOP THIS!
The clock is now ticking. They are clearing the land for quick demolition as we speak.
