End Breed Discrimination When Applying for Housing

End Breed Discrimination When Applying for Housing
The Issue
Did you know that 35% of the US Population rent? Did you know that 47% of the US Population own a dog?
The dog breeds that fall under most breed restrictions are;
- Pit Bull Terriers
- Staffordshire Terriers
- Rottweilers
- German Shepherds
- Presa Canarios
- Chows Chows
- Doberman Pinschers
- Akitas
- Wolf-hybrids
- Mastiffs
- Cane Corsos
- Great Danes
- Alaskan Malamutes
- Siberian Huskies
Focusing in; although dog bite/dog attack statistics prove that these dogs are in the higher range- we need to focus on who claims ownership of these breeds. Restricting a breed tends to do nothing but raise those negative statistics. The need a dog feels to attack is based strictly on how the dog was raised. When a dog is brought up in a bad area, lives with an abusive owner, isn't acclimated with other animals and/or children, or living in neglected environment- the dog will tend to display aggressive tendancies REGARDLESS of the breed. The dogs on the list above tend to be stronger than most other breeds, so when they attack the outcome is much worse than if it were a Yorkshire Terrier for example; which is why most of their attacks tend to be fatal, especially in Pit Bulls. Over 2,800 dogs a day are euthanized due to overcrowding in shelters, aggressive tendancies, or simply homelessness. If we choose to end Breed Discrimination, I believe that we can lower euthanasia numbers. Ending Breed Discrimination will allow more of these dogs to be adopted/re-homed; and into the right homes where an attack is unlikely.
This petition is targeted towards the insurance companies that discriminate against certain breeds, and targerted towards landlords that do not do research with their current insurance provider before denying an "aggressive" breed. With more research comes more knowledge. Breed restriction mainly came into play when insurance companies would not insure someone's property due to the breed of their dog. Now that times have changed; most insurance companies no longer follow policies along those lines. So the question at hand is why do landlords? This petition is meant to awaken landlords to the changing times, and also to awaken the insurance companies still following these policies. We need to make sure everyone is in the understand that "No breed is more aggressive than another!"
I was inspired to start this petition beacuse of my dog Grover- he is an XL American Bully (classified as a pitbull by uneducated landlords). Grover may look mean, but he is 100 pounds of nothing but pure love. I raised him well and never once laid a hand on him negatively. He has never bitten, attacked, or showed aggressive tendancies- and he never will. It took me about 6 months and about 20 viewings to find an apartment that I can at least sneak him in and out of. I could never find an apartment with him, because he is a restricted breed, and I could never leave him in a shelter- although most people would.
Help me end Breed Discrimination so we can give "Restricted Breeds" a chance.
Thank you.
