Last week I sent another letter to Stephen Poloz, providing him with an update on our campaign and again calling for Canadian women to be celebrated on bank notes. Since the letter is too long to post here, I've added it to this page on my heroines.ca website: http://www.heroines.ca/celebrate/currency3.html I sent a similar letter to Minister of Finance Joe Oliver, as he must approve all bank notes issued by the Bank of Canada. I also sent a letter to Kellie Leitch, Minister of Status of Women. Because her department is responsible for promoting equality for women and the Bank website indicates various government departments are consulted re bank note design, I asked Minister Leitch to provide input to the Bank of Canada to ensure an end to sexist bank notes. I hope these three letters will have some impact! Thanks to your support, we now have 53,787 signatures on our petition. Impressive! But still no action from the Bank of Canada. Is there more prejudice against women in Canada than in the UK, where the Bank of England fixed a similar problem after a petition was signed by about 35K? Remember the photo of a beaming Bank of England Governor Mark Carney as he unveiled the design for that Jane Austen bank note? And I keep thinking of that quote from British journalist Danica Kirka, who praised the announcement of a Jane Austen note as "a sign that there is plenty of pride and little prejudice against women on the country's currency." Please continue to spread the word about the petition and encourage your MPs to support the campaign, so that the Bank of Canada will produce bank notes that show some pride in the contributions of the many great Canadian women in our history!
