The Bank of Canada has just released a list of 12 women who will be considered for the new bank note to feature an iconic Canadian woman. An Advisory Council reviewed 461 eligible unique names suggested during public consultations. The Bank of Canada received more than 26,000 submissions. Which of these 12 women would you pick? Of course, there should be more than one Canadian woman featured on the next series - and I am still hopeful that that will happen! Meanwhile, the Royal Bank of Scotland announced plans to issue two new bank notes that will celebrate women. Author Nan Shepherd will be featured on the £5 note, and scientist Mary Somerville (first female member of the Royal Astronomical Society) will appear on the £10. http://www.rbs.com/news/2016/april/new-p5-and-p10-polymer-notes-unveiled.html In the United States, Treasury Secretary Lew announced that Harriet Tubman will be the face of a new $20 bill. Lew also shared the welcome news that "The new $10 will celebrate the history of the women’s suffrage movement, and feature images of Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul ..." The Treasury Dept. revealed there will also be more diversity on the new American $5: "The new $5 will honor historic events that occurred at the Lincoln Memorial in service of our democracy, and will feature Martin Luther King, Jr., Marian Anderson, and Eleanor Roosevelt. The front of the new $5 will retain the portrait of President Lincoln."
