Ban Witty Alien from Chess.com for rating manipulation
Ban Witty Alien from Chess.com for rating manipulation
The Issue
I've been an active member of Chess.com for several years now, and like many players, I value the integrity of the game and the fairness that should accompany it. However, I've been increasingly frustrated and disheartened by the actions of a user named Witty_Alien.
The issue lies in an unethical practice known as sandbagging, where a player intentionally loses games to lower their rating. Witty_Alien's rating swings wildly from 2900 to 2500, an anomaly that’s hard to ignore. These fluctuations can't be explained by normal losses and wins; they occur because this user resigns from numerous games before move 10 without any logical reason. This not only undermines the spirit of competitiveness but also impacts the player matchmaking system, affecting fair play for other users engaged on the platform.
Intentional manipulation of ratings not only skews the competitive environment but also discourages new and honest players from joining and staying active in the chess community. More importantly, it sets a poor precedent, suggesting that such behavior is acceptable or goes unchecked by those overseeing the platform.
Chess.com has created a space loved by millions worldwide for its strategic depth and community spirit. To protect this cherished environment, stronger action must be taken to deter players from exploiting the system. Banning users who intentionally undermine the integrity of the game is a vital step in maintaining trust among its members.
Our request is direct: We call upon the administrators of Chess.com to thoroughly review Witty_Alien's gameplay history and take decisive action against this clear breach of fair play standards.
Please join me in signing this petition if you believe in maintaining a fair and honest competitive environment on Chess.com. Let’s show that we as a community stand against unsportsmanlike conduct and work together to preserve the integrity of this classic game we all love.
On June 23rd, 2024, Witty Alien was rated 2690. Roughly 3 weeks later, on July 14th, 2024, Witty was rated 2232, a decrease of 458 points.
In the graph below, you can see how many games have been played by Witty and by players chosen at random near Witty's rating. I recorded how often games were lost by resignation before move 15. Out of the 5 players randomly selected, the highest resignation rate before move 15 was 0.50%. Witty_Alien is more than 6 times higher than that at 3.22%.

A sample of some of the games that Witty lost by resignation on move 2 since 2024.

An example of a game where Witty went into the game with the intention of losing (played f3 g4, and then resigned when they didn't checkmate him)
