The issue

To all who value Western Australia's spectacular beaches and marine life, I am seeking your support. With the massive uptake of 4WDs in recent decades, we have seen a significant increase in vehicles on our beaches. Beach driving not only has major environmental impacts but also poses risks to seabirds and beach-goers, particularly children and dogs.

Vehicles destroy fragile beach ecosystems and interfere with the nesting success of sea turtles and birds such as hooded plovers and oystercatchers, which camouflage their eggs in the sand. A recent study found that 81% of hooded plover nests had been crushed by vehicles. Cars also kill tiny crustaceans, an important food source for migratory birds, who travel many thousands of miles only to find no food source. Vehicles erode our fragile sand dunes, which act as an important buffer against storms and waves, and introduce weeds.

Most other states in Australia have either banned beach driving altogether or require a permit to drive on beaches.

Our beaches should be a place where we can enjoy nature and take time out from traffic and fumes. It is our duty to protect them. Join me and demand an end to vehicle driving on our beaches. Please, sign this petition.
