Ban Trans Fats Nationwide

The New York City Department of Public Health recently banned trans fats from restaurants. This petition is to get the FDA to ban trans fats on a nationwide level just like the New York City Department of Public Health did. Trans fats are the worst types of fats for the body because trans fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol levels.  Eating trans fats increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke.  It’s also associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This significantly increases the risk for heart disease. The American Heart Association suggests eliminating trans fats from your diet entirely.Trans fats contribute to 30,000 coronary artery disease deaths each year and 200,000 heart attacks that can be attributed to the use of trans fats in our food. 

Trans fats (or trans fatty acids) are created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid.  Another name for trans fats is “partially hydrogenated oils."  

The FDA does not currently require food companies to list trans fats on nutrition labels if there's less than 0.5 grams per serving. Foods that are labeled as having zero trans fats actually have trans fats and the American people don't even know it. The only way for a consumer to tell if a product has trans fats is to look under the ingredients for "hydrogenated vegetable oil." 

Trans fats can be found in many foods – but especially in fried foods like French fries and doughnuts, and baked goods including pastries, pie crusts, biscuits, pizza dough, cookies, crackers, and stick margarines and shortenings.  You can determine the amount of trans fats in a particular packaged food by looking at the Nutrition Facts panel.  You can also spot trans fats by reading ingredient lists and looking for the ingredients referred to as “partially hydrogenated oils." 

Companies like using trans fats in their foods because they’re easy to use, inexpensive to produce and last a long time.  Trans fats give foods a desirable taste and texture.  Many restaurants and fast-food outlets use trans fats to deep-fry foods because oils with trans fats can be used many times in commercial fryers.

Trans fats are contributing to the obesity epidemic around the world. One out of three Americans are obese and another 33 percent are overweight. By 2019 75% of Americans will be overweight. Healthcare costs are going keep going up unless we start trying to prevent diseases instead of treating diseases. 

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and heart disease are all preventable yet cost the United States billions of dollars in healthcare expenses each year. The country needs to take after Michelle Obama's lead and start focusing on nutrition. The food supply in this country is a major problem and there's no sign of it getting better unless the government takes action.
