Ban Ticket Resales Above Face Value. Tickets Are for Fans
The Issue
I am a passionate live-music fan, deeply frustrated by the current state of the ticketing industry. In recent years, purchasing tickets to concerts has become akin to playing a high-stakes game rather than simply securing a spot to enjoy an unforgettable experience crafted by artists for their fans. The joy of attending a live event should be about the music, not a financial gamble where every fan must compete against scalpers driven by profit.
Currently, ticket scalping is a pervasive issue, with resale prices often soaring far above the original value set by the artist, team, venue, or event organizer. This transforms tickets from granting access to an experience into speculative assets only the wealthy or fortunate can afford. Genuine fans are left out in the cold, once again prioritizing profit over passion.
To tackle this problem, we must urge Congress to pass legislation that caps ticket resale at the original purchase price. Such a cap would eliminate the profit incentive for scalping and ensure that tickets remain accessible to the fans who genuinely cherish the live event experience. Simultaneously, it's essential to allow ordinary fans the flexibility to transfer their tickets or recover their expenditures, fostering fairness without eliminating personal agency.
Furthermore, major ticketing platforms must take action. These platforms should implement secure fan-to-fan resale exchanges at face value, guaranteeing that ordinary fans are not subjected to inflated prices due to mandatory resale fees. This transparency and commitment to fair pricing can protect the integrity of the live entertainment industry we all love.
This petition is directed to influential leaders in our government, including Senate Commerce leaders Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, NC Sen. Ted Budd, and House leaders Gus Bilirakis and Jan Schakowsky. Together, we can make this change possible and preserve the magic of live events for the fans they are meant for.
Join me in calling on these leaders to take action and ensure that tickets remain a gateway to incredible experiences rather than mere commodities for exploitation. We must act now to preserve the live-event community and protect the future of entertainment for all fans.
Please sign this petition to lend your voice to the cause of fairness for fans. Let us stand together and demand change from those in power to keep live entertainments affordable and accessible to the true fans.
