The use of generative AI, be it text or image, takes away originality and authenticity within the context of the CVPA capstone showing. Many feel disrespected at the presence and use of AI and its unethical nature deeming it piracy and plagiarism. Though AI may be used as a tool for creating reference images, or brainstorming ideas in the early stages of a project, no AI should be displayed in the gallery exhibition.

The work being showcased by students in these creative projects should be personal and authentic to the artist, not something that is computer generated. Students making books should be writing and illustrating books, photography majors should be taking photos, painters should be painting, etc. The entire point of a capstone project is to show what you have learned, and the use of generative AI to write, illustrate, or design any aspect of a project directly threatens and undermines the integrity of the university and its students.

The university does not yet have an official policy on the use of generative AI and leaves this up to the discretion of the professors. 

We pose that for the senior capstone exhibitions no AI work of any kind, text or imagery, be put on display. If that is deemed to be asking too much of our peers we ask that at the very least the requirement of students who are displaying such work to label their work as being AI generated. If it is acceptable to use AI for your work you should have no problem being transparent about it.
