The Issue

Growing up surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of our countryside, I developed a deep respect for the wildlife and natural beauty that thrives there. However, like many, I have witnessed the disturbing sight of deflated balloons littering our fields, forests, and rivers. These seemingly innocent pieces of celebration or commemoration end up causing irreversible harm to our environment.

Non-compostable balloons, primarily made from latex and mylar, do not decompose naturally and can persist in the environment for years. They pose a significant threat to wildlife; birds, marine animals, and other creatures frequently mistake these colorful fragments for food. Ingesting balloon debris can lead to fatal blockages, starvation, and even death for these animals. According to the Marine Conservation Society, balloon debris was found in 20% more of UK beaches every year.

Mass balloon releases, despite their aesthetic or sentimental appeal, contribute to this environmental pollution in a concentrated manner. It amounts to littering on a grand scale.  When released, balloons don't ‘go to heaven’, they don’t simply vanish; they return to Earth, often dispersed over vast areas, making cleanup virtually impossible. Aside from posing a danger to wildlife, these remnants also degrade the natural landscape that so many communities cherish. How do you feel when you see someone littering on the street? Now compare that to how you think about people releasing hundreds of pieces of litter into the air.

The sale of non-compostable balloons to the public perpetuates this cycle of harm. However, solutions exist. We urge retailers and manufacturers to replace harmful materials with sustainable alternatives, such as biodegradable or water-soluble options. Furthermore, promoting awareness about the environmental impact of balloon waste is crucial for fostering responsible consumer behavior.

By enacting a ban on the sale of non-compostable balloons and prohibiting mass balloon releases, we can take a significant step towards safeguarding our natural environment. Such a measure would not only protect wildlife but also preserve the beauty of our countryside for future generations to enjoy. Let’s promote planting trees and flowers in memorial, rather than throwing plastic into the environment.

Let's come together to demand that authorities take action now. Sign this petition to help protect our countryside, wildlife, and natural heritage from the damage caused by non-compostable balloons.
