Ban the sale of fireworks to the public

The Issue

Fireworks are often seen as a harmless and “ normal” part of celebration, but for many, their unregulated sale and use cause fear, distress, and can even create situations of genuine danger.

My own experience has shown me the unnecessary agony fireworks cause to animals, as well as people suffering from PTSD and other mental health conditions.

The momentary pleasure for humans to see the “ pretty lights” and hear the unreasonably loud bangs does not justify or outweigh the distress and fear this causes to animals, sufferers of PTSD and other mental health conditions and the disruption to sleep for many people.

For those with pets or those who suffer from PTSD, the piercing sounds and unexpected bangs can be terrifying. Animals are often panic-stricken, unable to understand that they are not under attack, visibly shaking and cowering at every bang, the fear unrelenting in their eyes.

the only way I can imagine their fear is that of people in war torn countries with gunfire and bombs dropping all around them.

Animals do not understand when we tell them it’s okay. As humans we need to start to actually show some humanity and try and put ourselves in their shoes, then decide if the senseless and selfish act of letting off fireworks, any time, any where is really worth it?

Similarly, those with PTSD and other anxiety-related conditions may find these unexpected noises triggering and damaging to their mental health.

Not only is there an emotional price to pay, but the physical danger that fireworks present cannot be overlooked. As explosives, fireworks pose a significant risk of injury or even death if mishandled, in some circumstances being used as weapons or in incidents of antisocial behaviour to cause disruption and unrest.

The momentary spectacle fireworks provide should not outweigh the very real risks they impose on people and animals alike. Therefore, it is time to regulate this hazard. The sale of fireworks should be banned for public purchase, and their use restricted only to licensed events and professionals who can ensure safety and proper management, minimizing risks.

Fireworks can continue to be a part of celebrations such as national holidays and organised festivals, but under strict control measures. Licensed displays managed by trained professionals can offer the same awe without compromising public safety or wellbeing.

It is essential that legislative measures be put in place to prohibit the public sale of fireworks and limit their use to licensed, professionally managed events. By signing this petition, you are supporting the call for safer and more considerate practices concerning fireworks, helping to reduce distress and potential harm in our communities. Please join me in advocating for this change.
