Ban the Sale of Fireworks to the General Public and Restrict Their Use to Licensed, Organised Events Only.

Fireworks sold for personal and private use cause widespread harm, fear, injury, and lasting distress to animals, wildlife, and people. Their continued sale to the general public is unnecessary, unsafe, and incompatible with animal welfare, public safety, and community wellbeing.

 

My own dogs and cats experience extreme anxiety during fireworks. They refuse to eat, drink, or attend to their basic bodily needs. They tremble, hide, vocalise in distress, and remain fearful long after the noise has ended. This is not mild discomfort — it is genuine trauma.

 

Fireworks are not confined to a single evening. When sold to the general public, they are used unpredictably over prolonged periods, often late at night, leaving animals, vulnerable individuals, carers, and neighbours unable to prepare or feel secure in their own homes.

 

🌍 This world is not solely for humans. We are guardians of animals and wildlife, with a responsibility to protect them from avoidable fear, harm, and suffering caused purely for momentary entertainment.

⚠️ Misuse, Abuse, and Public Safety Concerns

Fireworks sold for private use are frequently misused.

There are recurring and well-documented incidents involving:

 • 💥 Fireworks being thrown at people

 • 🐾 Fireworks being deliberately used to frighten or harm animals

 • 🚸 Fireworks being accessed by or passed on to under-18s

 • ⚖️ Adults using fireworks irresponsibly or with malicious intent

My own sister was targeted by a minor who threw a firework at her as a form of amusement. She narrowly avoided serious injury by taking cover. Had the firework exploded closer, the consequences could have been severe and life-altering.

😔 There are also distressing cases in which animals have been deliberately targeted with fireworks, suffering such extreme injury and psychological trauma that euthanasia became unavoidable.

These incidents are not rare exceptions — they are the predictable result of allowing explosive devices to be sold for unsupervised private use.

🐾 Harm to Animals, Wildlife, and the Environment

Fireworks cause harm that extends far beyond temporary noise.

 • 😟 Sudden explosions trigger uncontrollable fear responses in animals

 • 💔 Pets experience panic, disorientation, and prolonged distress

 • 🚫 Many animals are unable to eat, drink, or attend to basic bodily needs due to fear

 • 🧠 Repeated exposure can result in long-term anxiety and behavioural disorders

Wildlife is also significantly affected:

 • 🐦 Birds abandon nests or collide with buildings

 • 🦊 Hedgehogs, foxes, deer, and small mammals flee into unsafe areas, including roads

 • ❄️ Feeding and hibernation patterns are disrupted, particularly during winter months

Horses and livestock may panic, injure themselves, break enclosures, or suffer fatal shock.

Fireworks also leave behind toxic residues, debris, and severe noise pollution that damage ecosystems and habitats.

🗑️ Debris, Litter, Noise Pollution, and Antisocial Behaviour

The harm caused by fireworks does not end when the noise stops.

The excessive and unpredictable noise created by private firework use constitutes noise pollution and antisocial behaviour, particularly when it occurs late at night or over extended periods.

Spent rockets, casings, sticks, and unexploded fireworks are frequently left scattered across lawns, pavements, parks, and green spaces. Those responsible often fail to clean up, leaving hazardous litter behind.

This behaviour creates further risks:

 • 🐕 Pets may chew, ingest, or injure themselves on remnants

 • 🐾 Wildlife may ingest debris or be physically harmed

 • 👶 Children may pick up unexploded fireworks

 • 🌱 Toxic materials pollute soil, grass, and water

This ongoing impact further demonstrates why fireworks should not be sold to the general public.

🚓 Fireworks as Weapons and Criminal Misuse

When placed in the hands of individuals with poor judgement or malicious intent, fireworks are increasingly misused as weapons rather than for celebration.

Their accessibility enables:

 • Threats and deliberate harm to people

 • Intentional terrorisation of animals

 • Burns, injuries, and lasting physical damage

 • Fear and disorder within communities

Restricting fireworks to licensed professionals would significantly reduce opportunities for misuse, weaponisation, and criminal harm.

❌ Why Public Sale Is Unjustifiable

Fireworks are not essential. Entertainment cannot outweigh the harm they cause.

 • 🔓 Existing restrictions are routinely bypassed

 • 🎁 Fireworks are easily resold, gifted, or misused

 • 👶 Under-18 access remains common

 • ⚠️ Reliance on personal responsibility has repeatedly failed

 • 🗑️ Antisocial behaviour, hazardous litter, and noise pollution are widespread

 • 🚓 The risk of weaponisation and criminal misuse is well established

Fireworks should not be exempt from basic standards of safety and responsibility simply because they are traditionally associated with celebration.

✅ A Proportionate and Humane Solution

This petition does not seek to end celebrations.

It calls for fireworks to be:

 • 🚫 Not sold to the general public

 • 🚫 Not permitted for personal or private use

 • 🚫 Not resold, gifted, or shared

 • 🚫 Not accessible to under-18s

 • 🪪 Sold only to licensed professionals

 • 🎆 Used only at authorised, organised events

 • ⏰ Strictly limited by date, time, and noise level

This approach allows communities to celebrate while protecting animals, wildlife, and vulnerable individuals from harm.
