Ban the publication of articles exploiting inquest findings relating to suicide
The Issue
Cornwall Live has repeatedly attended inquest hearings related to suicide, with an aim to publish and profit from the stories of those who have lost their lives to mental health, as well as the stories of their families.
Where there is attendance, they attend virtually, and with their cameras switched off; displaying their consciousness of their own immorality, with no remorse or desire to make a change.
Reporting on all details of inquest findings causes extreme emotional distress for grieving families, and leaves their personal lives open to public opinion and scrutiny.
After losing my brother to suicide, I have experienced the direct effects of their use, exploitation and publication of inquest findings. Through their exploitation of his struggle with addiction, as well as his own grief, they generated an article solely intended for intrigue and attention of readers; not with consideration for his family, nor to his memory.
Their publications aim to attract a maximal audience, which leads to the exaggeration and introduction of bias to make for a better headline.
This risks tarnishing the precious memory of those who have lost their lives to suicide, and intentionally places their loved ones at risk. Causing further disruption to their lives, and individual grieving processes.
Those bereaved by suicide are 65% more likely to take their own lives.
In light of this statistic, Cornwall Live continues to open up grieving families personal lives, on a platform with over 4 million readers. Knowingly placing these families at further risk, with the sole purpose of increasing their own financial gain.
With suicide becoming a growing issue across Cornwall, the United Kingdom and worldwide, more needs to be done to protect the people who are directly affected by it - ensuring the prevention of the extortion and publication of their personal lives, by press companies such as Cornwall Live.
This is a serious issue regarding the morals and ethics of journalism within Cornwall; requiring immediate attention and change.
