The issue
In the early hours of 26th December 2025, my neighborhood was jolted awake by the deafening sound of fireworks. At around 2 a.m., someone recklessly let off two strings of noisy, multi-shot mortar-launched bursts. This incident is not an isolated one; it reflects a recurring issue that is wreaking havoc across our communities throughout New Zealand.
The sale of fireworks to the public provides an opportunity for a minority of irresponsible individuals to cause immense distress to many others. Our current laws, though designed to restrict the time and place fireworks can be used, fall short of addressing the problem effectively. The authorities often find it challenging to catch and prosecute offenders, rendering these regulations almost moot.
The consequences of this oversight are severe and heartbreaking. There are too many stories of pets dying from fright, horses bolting into fences only to be later euthanized, and people being kept awake, anxious and distressed in their own homes. These incidents compound every year, especially around Guy Fawkes and New Year's Eve, making countless individuals and animals suffer needlessly.
Other nations, such as Finland and Germany, have taken decisive steps by implementing stricter controls on the sale and use of fireworks, successfully reducing the associated nuisances. It’s time for us to follow suit. We need action that effectively prevents the misuse of fireworks and safeguards the well-being of our citizens and animals alike.
I urge lawmakers and relevant authorities to ban the public sale of all consumer fireworks, allowing only licensed displays managed by professionals. This would significantly reduce the disturbances and potential hazards posed by random fireworks displays, supporting a safer, more peaceful environment for everyone.
Please sign this petition to demand responsible changes to our current fireworks laws, ensuring the safety and peace of our communities and protecting the lives of animals who suffer each year.
