Alex has asked me to get back to you about your concerns with hoons and noisy vehicles.
As you are aware, after considerable advocacy, the NSW Government's noise camera trial finally commenced in December 2024. The trial is aimed at tackling vehicle noise pollution and hoon behaviour. The initial trial is in the Bayside Council area and Wollongong. Alex is hopeful that the trial will be successful and that noise cameras will be rolled out in Sydney electorate areas identified as having high rates of hoon activity. In the meantime, it remains that the EPA and Police both have enforcement roles but need to witness the incident and vehicle to issue fines and require illegal vehicle modifications to be fixed. By reporting vehicle details, the EPA can locate, communicate and regulate the owner of a vehicle, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation. Report noisy vehicle pollution through: Report to EPA
Police can deal with noise complaints arising from residential premises, motor vehicles and marine vessels, and you can contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
Alex is also aware that:The City of Sydney is planning to conduct community consultations later this year regarding proposed traffic calming measures in the area.
NSW Police will continue operations as capacity allows and are in the process of compiling data from multiple units. This information will be shared with Alex and he has followed up on this today.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority’s noise monitoring cameras remain in trial phase until the end of the year.
