Ban the Employment and Use of reCAPTCHA Globally

The Issue

Hello, everybody. This is Nicholas Armstrong.

Are you frustrated by being locked out of websites due to reCAPTCHA? Many individuals, including myself, face this issue daily. Regardless of IP address, geographic location, or the use of a VPN, reCAPTCHA often fails, presenting false prompts and glitches—most predominantly on Mac devices and across various websites.

The so-called "audio challenge" offers no fair chance, frequently dismissing genuine attempts with the message, "Your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." This isn’t merely a personal inconvenience; it’s a systemic problem impacting millions.

There is no logical explanation for issues like searching quickly, phonetic typing of English in Latin script, or transliteration into Cyrillic script when it says, "Showing results for: Query" or "Search instead for: Query."

Evidence of reCAPTCHA's flaws is clear when comparing Google's clean IP addresses with those flagged in association with reCAPTCHA. Similar issues arise with other CAPTCHA systems, including Яндекс. Moreover, reCAPTCHA's zero tolerance for any suspicion makes it nearly impossible for legitimate users to navigate without being blocked.

I believe it is crucial to advocate for CAPTCHAs that require only a single click and do not involve visual or audio challenges or tracking mechanisms. CAPTCHAs that involve these additional challenges should be considered illegal. Such barriers hinder genuine users from accessing essential digital content and services. Notably, China has made strides by ensuring that the Chinese Bing uses no form of CAPTCHA.

Additionally, we must address the potential for abuse in reporting systems. I've witnessed how malicious reports can unjustly shut down important petitions. For instance, a recent attempt to falsely report a petition regarding a respiratory infection demonstrates the harm these tactics can inflict on genuine efforts for change.

In contrast, Cloudflare Turnstile has emerged as a reliable alternative, succeeding consistently without resorting to audio or visual challenges or accusations of automated queries, even when failures occur.

While reCAPTCHA aims to protect websites from bots, it raises the question: how many genuine users are being unintentionally excluded? Rather than placing blame, we should focus on fostering collaboration among tech companies to strengthen security measures and prevent exploitation.

Recent Update: Much of the issues with reCAPTCHA are caused also by a glitch with the scoring system clearly caused by hackers abusing reCAPTCHA.  Your score can be 0.9 or 1 which always goes through with 1 click only to randomly drop to 0 or even less than zero, and being a signed value, it is treated as a negative number instead of a large positive number, which means that you'll get a challenge and the audio and visual challenges being glitched makes it almost impossible and completely random to succeed if you get a challenge.  And for unknown reasons, when logged out of your Google account, or if it doesn't know if you're logged in or logged out, reCAPTCHA cannot even check your score and treats it as 0.0 or a negative score, even if it's 0.9, making it impossible to succeed.

And there is more evidence.  We, the undersigned, call for the immediate reform or complete replacement of the reCAPTCHA system due to its significant flaws and the unnecessary disruption it causes to legitimate users. The current implementation of reCAPTCHA is demonstrably flawed, overly restrictive, and potentially dangerous. Here are the key issues:

Technological Capability: Google possesses the technological capability to recognize the semantics of searches and identify keyboard layouts, as demonstrated by their other products and services. However, reCAPTCHA fails to leverage this existing technology to distinguish legitimate users from bots, leading to a high false positive rate.
Design Flaw: The system’s inability to distinguish legitimate users from bots, despite Google’s technological capabilities, points to a critical design flaw. This failure results in unnecessary challenges and disruptions for users.
Life-Threatening Consequences: The high false positive rate can lead to life-threatening situations, for example, with doctors and patients in a hospital, making this issue more than just an inconvenience. The system’s failure to prevent harm underscores the need for significant reform.
Unnecessary Disruption: Legitimate users face unnecessary disruptions due to the flawed system. For example, transliteration and orthographic changes, which prioritize the original pronunciation and form of words, should not cause reCAPTCHA issues. However, the system fails to account for these nuances, leading to false positives.
Browser Variability: reCAPTCHA scores vary widely across different browsers and devices, leading to unpredictable user experiences. For instance, the reCAPTCHA score detector shows different scores on Safari, Edge on MacBook Air, and Edge on Windows, indicating a lack of standardization.
Negative Scores: The system sometimes assigns negative scores due to a glitch, which should not happen and results in unnecessary challenges. This further highlights the flawed nature of the current implementation.
Call for Reform: The combination of these factors makes a strong case for significant reform or even the complete replacement of the reCAPTCHA system. The current system is overly restrictive and fails to utilize existing technology to prevent harm, resulting in unnecessary disruption and potentially life-threatening situations.

By signing this petition, we collectively advocate for the abolition of reCAPTCHA and the promotion of user-friendly alternatives. Let’s assert our right to unrestricted, fair access to digital content and services.

This is a global issue, well-documented and recognized. I draw from my experiences, testimonies, and numerous online sources to highlight this matter.
